Is Appeton Weight Gain a Waste of Money?
If you are living in Malaysia, I'm sure you've all seen those Appeton Weight Gain (Adult) TV Commercials. They are funny alright.
Kelakar jugak la but does it actually work that way? Just 1 or 2 scoops per day cukup untuk menambahkan berat badan? The answer is No! A weight gainer alone doesn't won't "really" help you gain weight. So if you are one of those people who have bought Appeton or any other weight gainer, this post is for you.
So..How to Gain Weight or Bulk Up Lah?
Well in summary, you need 3 things: 1) A Reason to Grow, 2) Food to build and yes, lastly 3) Supplements do help. You can do without supplements but the first two are crucial! Lemme me break it down for you.
- Muscles need a reason to grow. When we talk about weight gain, we usually (or always) mean muscle gain....no one wants to really gain fat. Hitting the buffet and stuffing yourself with supplments IS NOT A REASON ;)... Weight training ataupun senaman mengangkat berat or main best is the catalyst for weight gain. Putting your muscles through stress and strain (the workout) makes your muscles literally wanting to grow. Why? Think of it as a defense mechanism. Your body is thinking that it needs to get stronger in order to sustain the "new" workload. That is why you need to continually diversify and increase the weights - to continually give your body a reason to keep on get bigger.
- Building Blocks or food. Yes this is where makanan dan supplements like weight gainers come in. Note this - Once your body wants to grow YOU THAN NEED TO supply it with "stuff" that it can build on. Food lah. What kind? Well typically you need carbs and protein (the staple ingredients of weight gainers). When? Well a must before ad after your workout and also throughout the day. So make sure you get your 5-7 meals per day. Wanna gain weight? Than yeah you gotta eat!
- Supplements do help. Tapi ingat, makanan tambahan don't work magic. There's nothing special in weight gainers like Appeton. They are mainly loaded with carbs (dextrose - think hospital drip), combination of proteins and yeah some fat as well. Thats usually it. So why buy them? well its up to you but they are convenient for pre and postworkout meals. I persoanlly use whey protein supplements daily. Why? Coz they are convenient and give me what I need. So remember to know what you are buying and know what you need ;) Other suppls like creatine and glutamine are great as well but, in my opinion should only be used second to weight gainers.
So is Appeton Weight Gainer a Waste of Money?
Without weight training - YES but if used in combination with weight training and a decent nutrition plan (makanan lah), weight gainers like Appeton are good and effective as they give you want you need. That said, most weight gainers are pretty good - regardless of brand. I personally prefer US based brands like Dymatize, Champion Nutrition or Prolab..but hey its a consumers choice ;) Happy Shopping.

Soalan on Steroids?
I just joined gym last september and the reult quite slow. Originally my weight was 56kg and my height 5' 6"(176cm) and now my weight is 1kg and sometime it varies up n down by 500grams.
How can i improve? I take hormon 1nce a week/ jap that suggested by my instructor.. is taht good enough?
Hope u'll advise me in addition i'm taking testosterone and tecca (dunt know the spelling) supplied by my instructor taken once a week. Steroid jap at d buttock.
Avoid Steroids!
Firstly I would strongly advice you against taking any hormone based japs/steroids in Malaysia or anywhere around the world. They are dangerous and not the answer. Weight gain is about 3 things:
- Nutrition: Tanpa makanan badan anda tidak bole membesar (tambah berat badan). Jadi, untuk weight gain, azreel firstly kena pastikan anda makan 5-7 kali sehari dengan makananan yang seimbang.
- Weight Training: Training mengangkat berat adalah perangsang kepada tumbesaran badan. Tanpa perangsang yang baik, otot tidak mempunyai sebab untuk ingin membesar. Kalau tiada perangsang, makanan berlebihan hanya disimpan sebagai lemak dan bukan sebagai otot baru. Melatih semata2 pun tak ke mana. Yang penting adalah quality latihan bukan quantity. Quality training not quantiti. Push yourself dengan tingkatkan beban tanpa hilang form. Rehat secukupnya selepas latihan. Makanan pre dan postworkout adalah a must.
- Supplements: Natural food or sports supplements are great sebab it gives you want you need. Tapi anda harus faham keperluan anda. Since your goal is weight gain, anda bole pertimbangkan.
- Calories: Weight gainers sesuai sekiranya kurang disiplin untuk makan. Kalau tak pun protein powders are essential.
- Tenaga: Creatine tingkatkan ATP (tenaga) output dengan semula jadi.
- Recovery: Glutamine baik untuk cepatkan proses pemulihan Selepas workout
Ingat sekali lagi, jauhkan diri daripada steroids. There is no shortcut…take your time tapi sayangkan diri!
Do you need MultiVitamins?
I'd definitely recommend them to everyone, regardless of age or level of activity. Why? Coz it saves you the headache of having to "try" to get all your micro-nutrients from regular food & they are CHEAP!
Which brand? Doesn't really matter.....just make sure you stick to basics and get a daily cap supplements that suit your age lifestyle and yeah maybe your gender as well.
How much? I'd stick to those that'll cost me about RM1 or less per serving.
Whey Protein atau Weight Gainer?
Protein in general adalah asas supplement untuk:
- membina otot
- membaiki otot
- memelihara otot
Untuk weight/muscle gain, anda perlu makan lebih dan training yang intensif. Makanan balanced in terms of carbs, protein & lemak (dalam nisbah lebih kurang 50:35:15) dan lain lain lagi...supplements helps tetapi we have to get the basics right jugak.
- Whey Protein adalah supplement calorie rendah hanya dengan kandungan protein (whey) dan mungkin 1-2g carbs/lemak. Protein supplement alone will not make you gain weight.
- Weight Gainer adalah campuran protein (whey, casein, egg dll) dan carbs ringkas (dextrose atau maltodextrin).
Mana yang lebih baik, whey protein or weight gainer?
- Hmmm kalau duit tidak menjadi halangan, weight gainer lebih sesuai kerana mengandungi kedua-duanya.
- Whey protein lebih ekonomi dan carbs (daripada gainer) bole diganti dengan carbs tempatan (roti, nasi) dll.
- Kalau anda kurang rajin makan dan beli makanan THAN weight gainer lebih sesuai kerana ia sudah mengandungi kesemuanya.
- Pun tak menjadi masah untuk menggunakan kedua-duanya. Ambil protein sepanjang masa dan weight gainer time anda nak gain weight (dengan training yang berpatutan)
- Ingat bahawa mengambil weight gainer tanpa training yang sesuai pun tidak akan menaikkan berat badan anda.

Questions about Whey Protein
1) I am 168cm and 71kgs, I wanna tone up my body and convert that extra meat to muscle. I currently start the workout at True Fitness. I also bought the Optimum Whey Protein. Normally I take 1 serve early in the morning (before gym) and 1 serve after the gym. If no workout on that day, I will take 1 serve. Is that the correct way?
2) Someone told me I should take Whey Protein with Ripped, What is that?
- Ripped? Sounds like the Horley’s product. Hmmm…don’t actually know what’s in it but I would consume whey with carbs (separately pun ok). Or combine with supplements like glutamine or creatine (look for these ingredients ). The actual marketing/label name is not so important. Its like salt…salt is salt no matter what the packaging says.
3) What else you recommend me if I wanna reduce some weight and firm my body?
- reduce? Hmmm, you gotta take care of your diet and training. Fat burners work but they are not magic supplements.
4) Is that any other supplement like vitamin i need to take?
- I would definitely recommend a Multi-Vitamin to take care of your micronutrition needs.
