First Pregnancy Q&A
Since this is the first baby for both my wife and I, we both have a lot of learning to do … and I of course need to know as much as possible about how to jaga my beautiful wife and our baby (rafa?). Following are some of the questions I had and what I found out:
How much to eat?
Hahah since I am in health and fitness, thats the first question I had. So based on what I read here, she needs some 200-300 extra calories per day but most importantly these should NOT come from junk food. A balanced diet is always the way to go. She would normally need some 1700 calories per day so now its roughly around 2000 calories per day.
What to eat? A balanced diet. We are aiming for a 55:30:15 ratio of carbs, protein and fats. For supplements it is recommended to look up the following: Folic acid , iron, zinc and calcium.
What to drink?
They say stick to water, milk, juices, vegetable juice. Chocolate milk is ok as well.
Avoid drinking alcohol, soft drinks, sport drinks, herbal teas and go easy on caffeine.
What foods to avoid when you are pregnant?
Ok I am new to this as well but this is what I found out to AVOID
- Large Fish: Swordfish, shark etc due to higher levels of methylymercury, a metal detrimental to a growing child’s brain and nervous system.
- Fish caught in rivers: Something to do with recreational anglers may hook fish contaminated with bacteria or chemicals.
- Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, seafood and eggs: Due to possible bacteria etc
- Hot dogs and luncheon meats: also coz of some bacterias
- Alcohol: well obviously as it robs developing cells of oxygen, making normal development impossible.
What about exercise?
My dad said to avoid excessive movements around her pelvic as the embryo needs time to properly position and stabilize during the first trimester. But generally stretching and walking are good and encouraged but we ought to consult our gynie terlebih dahulu.
What she can and cannot do?
Its commonsense for smoking and other vices. Hmm what else?
What about sex? According to this article, yeah sex is ok as long as there are no complications of course. Most sexual positions are OK. But by the third trimester, weight gain, back pain etc “may dampen your enthusiasm for sex”.
How much does a pregnancy cost?
Couldn’t find much about actual costs in Malaysia and I sure it depends on the kind of treatments, hospitals, gynie that you choose. Based on some estimates, probably around RM10,000 – RM15,000 or more depending on complications if any.
…in the US, the costs of raising a baby to age 18 costs between $125,000-$250,000 and that’s not including college tuition!…
Can we still travel?
According to this website, it is generally ok to travel but best during the 2nd trimester.
Thats it for now kot! 🙂
nice posting..u r really super excited!!n i'm happy to hear that u guys r expecting..
BTW,i am a first time mom-to-be too and now in my 3rd tri.
most of your findings above are true, n for travelling, even she's in 3rd tri, she still can, but need some doctor's letter..(i did it on my 34wks!!)
for the workout, i guess, the best tri would be 2 tri as in this tri, she will have more energy compare to the 1 tri(1 tri is always being a time for a new mom to adjust her body, hormone and all stuffs…that's why she will have low energy n start to "muntah" too)..even in my 3 tri now, i'm still doing my workout dilligently and i could say it helps me a lot to curb my energy level and the other benefit is i dont develop any ankle or wrist swelling..
🙂
thanks for the advice 🙂
Wah.. Menarik panduan ni.. Simple dan mudah nak ikut. Thanks Kevin..
Hi Kevin,
Congrats!! And Alhamdulillah! I'm a mother to a 3 years old daughter. Based on my ( and friends) experience, if u n Rio wish to have ur baby breastfeed exclusively, u might consider adding kurma, lots of fruits n sayur2 hijau like sawi, lobak putih in mommy's diet. Those are supposed to encourage milk production.
And most important of all, if u n Rio could, cuba khatamkan mengaji Quran as frequent as possible throughout the pregnancy.
Enjoy the beautiful pregnancy experience! Priceless!!
yup, agree with sis suzana..n the other thing, amalkan bacaan such as Maryam, Yusof, and several surah. Or, u could always play these surah early and before bedtime..insyaAllah, ur baby will be OK n safe-guarded!
plus, utk hilangkan rase sakit2 during the labor(i give tips early laa), try to hafal that doa nabi yunus..
most of mommies yg nk bersalin will always hafal that doa in order to help em during the labor..
🙂
[…] May 2010 12 ShareIn my earlier article, I researched more about nutrition for pregnant women. In this little series, here are some exercise do’s and […]
just found out about you and your blog thru google. a little confused how you got married in april but had a baby only 7months later *scratches head*
Not sure why / the intention of such question. This is very inappropriate & I dont think Kevin will bother to answer such question. But if you're so hooked up on it, better get your facts right first, and calculate in weeks, not months.
anies pls google about pregnancy before u shoot a silly question 😉 how do u calculate the months? i assume that u dont have enough fingers to count in another 2mths. say the baby is conceived in april, countdown will start from first day of last period which is maybe including march. after plus minus 2 weeks, my fingers still count 9 months :))
